Mousehole

Mousehole, (Pron. Mauzul) up until the 16th century was a thriving commercial centre and port with a royal charter for a market once a week and a fair that lasted three days, coinciding with the festival of St Barnabas. However in 1592 Carlos de Amésquita of Spain launched raids on the towns that surround Mount’s Bay. Mousehole, along with Penzance, Newlyn and Paul was destroyed. Just one building was left standing in Mousehole, the Keigwin Arms, a local pub and now a private residence.

A new lifeboat station at Penlee Point on the outskirts of the village was opened in 1913. On the 19th December 1981, the entire lifeboat crew of 8 were lost attempting a rescue in hurricane force winds. The lifeboat was moved to Newlyn shortly after this tragic event but continues to be known as the Penlee Lifeboat.

Mousehole has seen a huge increase in second home ownership in the last 20 years or so with a corresponding decline in the resident population. Second home ownership is a big issue in many parts of Cornwall as it is in other beauty spots around the country. About a third of Cornwall has ‘Area of outstanding natural beauty’ designation and is protected much like a national park. This is a huge attraction naturally.

Many second homes lie empty for much of the year whilst young people, unable to afford the inflated house prices that people from other parts of the UK are willing to pay, are forced to leave the villages that have been their family’s home for generations. This has a huge impact as second home owners invariably bring what they need for their short stays with them and so contribute little to the local economy. Shops and other amenities struggle to survive on what little trade is left resulting in the decline of many, once thriving, local communities.
